IT departments are constantly being pressured to do more with less, and the proposition of adequately staffing IT resources at remote locations is too cost prohibitive for most organizations.

Centralized IT staff members are left with limited options to effectively manage infrastructure at remote locations. The network monitoring software (NMS) systems they are accustomed to using in the network operations center (NOC) do a good job of providing in-depth infrastructure monitoring data for a single location, but cannot reliably extend this visibility across multiple remote locations, due to their inherent dependency on network connectivity.

So administrators are left with access-level tools such as terminal or console servers, which can provide an ad-hoc, out-of-band connection during a network outage or disruption at a remote site, but lack actionable intelligence to actually repair a problem once it has been diagnosed. The net result is that an administrator may be able to gain remote access to a site, but they still will not have the tools or management services available to effectively support or repair remote devices. If the problem cannot be addressed manually via a "raw" out-of-band connection, then additional resources have to be dispatched onsite to resolve the problem, which increases operational costs and reduces system and application availability for remote employees.

Remote Management Capabilities

Survivable Connectivity —

Our solutions don’t rely on the network to manage the network. Uplogix’ out-of-band Envoy appliances are co-located and directly connected to devices and servers to deliver survivable connectivity, as well as localized management services – regardless of the state of the network or device.

When the primary network connection is lost, Envoy NRMs immediately establish remote connectivity using a dial-up modem, cellular network, or satellite communications. This enables the appliances to deliver secure, always-on connectivity to the devices, giving you the survivable access you need when the network is down.

Complementing its survivable connectivity capabilities, Envoy NRM also offers an optional robust power management feature that enables you to monitor and control power remotely. Envoy appliances can be set to automatically manage power or can allow a network administrator to manually control individual power outlets, create logical groupings, monitor current, and control power-up sequencing. This power management option takes the headache out of power cycling devices in remote locations, eliminating truck rolls and saving you valuable time.

Automated Problem Resolution —
Envoy NRM prevents small problems from becoming big ones by diagnosing and automatically fixing common problems at remote locations. While it may seem too good to be true, Envoy NRM can address 95% of the issues that commonly impact distributed networks with its active console management capabilities.

Unlike other out-of-band products that only provide access, Envoy appliances leverage their serial connections to managed devices and servers to collect data on hundreds of network performance variables. Using built-in intelligence, Envoy NRM then expertly correlates the collected data to diagnose common problems and then to automate fixing them.

Using device manufacturers’ best practices, Envoy NRMs have hundreds of built-in management procedures that enable the appliances to take action when certain conditions occur. For example, Envoy NRM can automatically recover devices from ROMmon state or power cycle a frozen console.

Streamlined Maintenance Tasks —
Envoy NRM offers significant time and cost savings by automating routine management tasks for remote infrastructure and eliminating common errors introduced by manual execution of these tasks. In fact, Envoy NRM appliances automate more than 60% of normal maintenance tasks – like OS upgrades, password updates, and configuration changes.

Via the NRMS’ central management console, configuration changes can be issued enterprise-wide with a few mouse clicks. Throughout the distributed infrastructure, Envoy NRMs receive their orders from the NRMS and execute the configuration changes locally, leveraging their dedicated serial connections to managed devices. If a configuration change fails, Envoy appliances immediately roll the device back to the last known good configuration using our unique SurgicalRollbackª feature.
